StreetLib is an online IT platform that - in short - allows authors and publishers to purchase editorial services as well as upload and store their audiobooks and ebooks for their marketing to end users through digital bookstores, web applications and mobile devices connected to StreetLib or through brick-and-mortar bookstores.

StreetLib is accessible through the website owned by SL www.streetlib.com. StreetLib and its various interfaces and web pages were created by and are owned by StreetLib S.r.l. ("SL"), with registered office in Corso Venezia 10, 20123 Milan (MI), Italy, tax code and VAT number 05338720963, email address (certified): simplicissimus@pec-mail.it, REA MI-2094063.

The use of StreetLib entails the access by the authors or publishers ("Users") within the IT environment owned by SL, which SL makes available to the User in order to provide the requested services. To this end, it is necessary to accept these General Terms and Conditions, which the User therefore declares to have viewed and accepted, binding on the provisions contained therein.

By accepting these General Terms and Conditions, the User completes the process of registration and creation of their personal account, necessary for the use of StreetLib.

These General Terms and Conditions add to the special conditions applicable to individual products and / or services offered by SL through StreetLib, contributing to the overall regulation of the relationship between the User of StreetLib and SL.

The main services accessible through StreetLib fall into the following categories:

  • - Editing services;
  • - Marketing/Distribution services;
  • - ”Print on demand” services.

1. Access to StreetLib

The access to StreetLib by the User takes place after registration and creation of a personal account, consisting of a username and password. During the registration phase, the User identifies and releases the data and information requested by the platform, under its own exclusive responsibility and with the obligation of every wider indemnity against SL for any prejudice that may occur in relation to the untruthfulness, not accuracy, or incompleteness of the data communicated.

To sign up, the User enters its email address as a username and chooses an adequately secure password. The password must meet the security criteria suggested by the platform at the signing-up.

Once the registration and personal account creation phase has been completed, the User, with its login credentials, has the right to browse within StreetLib. The use of StreetLib by the User is however subject to the acceptance of the particular conditions applicable from time to time to the individual services or products offered by SL through the platform. The User therefore undertakes to provide correct and truthful information and to inform SL promptly in the event of any change in such information. Each User is aware of accessing and entering data in the IT environment of SL and therefore being responsible for all the actions and functions performed in that environment through their own account.

SL does not provide any warranties, explicit or implicit, in relation to the functionality and adequacy of the StreetLib environments with respect to the needs and expectations of the User.

2. Use of StreetLib

Not Permitted uses. Without prejudice to other provisions in this document and in the special conditions applicable to individual services or products, the User acknowledges that it is not allowed:

  • • to upload, publish or disclose, through StreetLib, information that may be dangerous, obscene, defamatory or otherwise illegal;

3. Links to other websites

The User acknowledges that StreetLib may include links to third party websites, in relation to which SL assumes no liability or guarantee with reference to the operation, content, services offered and / or any other information contained therein. Any access or use of these websites by the User is the responsibility of the User itself.

4. Revisions to StreetLib and to the General Terms and Conditions

SL, for both commercial and technical needs, may make improvements or revisions to data, information, images, services, layouts, products and other features present on StreetLib.

SL can modify these General Terms and Conditions. The changes take effect immediately upon posting on the site. Continued access or use of StreetLib following the publication of the revisions is deemed acceptance of the amended General Terms and Conditions, which the User therefore has the obligation to view. If the User does not agree with the changes, she should remove its contents from StreetLib. The User can decide to terminate its relationship with SL at any time, closing its account on StreetLib, subject to compliance with the obligations in place towards SL or third parties deriving from the prior use of the services provided through the platform and up to fulfilment of the same.

5. Industrial property, opinions and data

The User acknowledges that trademarks, images, graphic signs, logos, processes, contents and in general any industrial property related to StreetLib, are the exclusive property of SL. In no case, the use of StreetLib by the User can be understood as an assignment or license on the industrial property of SL.

The User is prohibited from copying, modifying, altering, publishing, disseminating, distributing, selling or otherwise transferring, in whole or in part, any element of StreetLib, just as any use that could affect industrial property rights is prohibited by SL. Any data on StreetLib can be downloaded, printed or copied by the User exclusively for practices strictly related to the use of the platform.

SL may ask Users to provide opinions on StreetLib. In this case, the User undertakes to provide SL with its opinion correctly and in no case aimed at damaging a company for the benefit of a competitor. The User acknowledges and accepts that the opinions collected by SL could be published by SL itself on its website or social channels, in order to publicize opinions and judgments on the functionality and quality of the services offered.

6. Security and protection of the User's and third parties' personal data

The login credentials (username and password) are kept by the User, are strictly personal and must not be communicated and / or shared with other parties. If there is reasonable doubt that the login credentials have been used by third parties, the User must immediately change the log-in password, promptly communicating the incident to SL; should the User be unable to attend, the password can be cancelled by the system administrators and replaced with a new password. The new password will be communicated by the system administrator to the User, who will have to change it at the first access.

All the information provided by the User through the registration and use of StreetLib, as well as the information that is in any case related to the User (including the login credentials to the platform), are kept and processed through secure IT systems, of SL and / or third parties connected to SL. SL will use, and will ensure that said third parties undertake to use, the standard tools and practices to maintain an adequate level of IT security for the provision of its services. However, SL cannot guarantee that its own or third party systems are exempt from the possibility of cyber attacks.

The User's personal data are processed in accordance with current law and regulations (GDPR 2016/679; Legislative Decree 196/2003 and subsequent amendments, in particular those introduced by Legislative Decree 101/2018) and as specifically indicated in the Privacy Policy viewable on the platform, which the User declares to have read, understood and accepted. In any case, the User acknowledges that SL, through StreetLib, has access to the User's data and content, which it may also possibly disclose in the cases provided for by law.

The User, with reference to the use of StreetLib and any third party data processed through it, undertakes, to the extent of its competence, to comply with any legal obligation mandatory and deriving from the mentioned regulation.

7. Maintenance and IT inefficiencies

SL will periodically update and maintain the system during which access to the platform may be temporarily unavailable. Likewise, in the presence of inefficiencies or malfunctions of the IT systems provided by third parties, the platform could become temporarily inaccessible.

8. Indemnify

The User provides wide indemnity, undertaking to hold SL harmless, in relation to any damage or loss, direct or indirect and of any kind, which may arise to SL itself or to third parties as a result of the violation by the User of these General Terms and Conditions and / or in case of illegal action or omission however carried out by the User through StreetLib.

StreetLib is a tech-book company: we are technologists and we are building the best possible technological platforms to support and empower books publishers of any kind and from anywhere.

Furthermore, StreetLib has a revenue-share based business model, with no-upfront nor recurring costs, and this makes StreetLib one of the most indie-friendly cloud publishing platforms and distribution services out there.

--

As stated in the StreetLib Distribution Agreement, paragraph 11, we do not tolerate:

  • 1. content, data or information that are illegal or contrary to personal data regulation, good morals and/or public order.
  • 2. ebooks that contain pornography, child pornography and/or in any case contents which are obscene, defamatory or abusive, or contents that are discriminatory or offensive in relation to religions, race, gender or nationalities or offensive to third parties in general.

--

Even though we make our content policy very clear on our website and in our distribution agreement, over time we've been forced to manage an increasing number of "bad actors" (or spammers) that have been taking advantage of our easy-to-use service to publish and distribute masses of low-quality content (mainly ebooks).

This problem harms ebooks consumers and affects the reputation of our publishers and retail and library partners. It also feeds a growing bias against independently published works, which we rather think is extremely important to support. We definitely want to solve this problem.

We believe that putting the StreetLib Content Integrity Guidelines in place and making them publicly available is the best way to address the issue.

--

The criteria below describe the types of content that StreetLib may block, either automatically or with the intervention of our Content Management Team:

  • 1-- Content with invalid ISBN codes. Please note that the ISBN code must be purchased and registered by the national ISBN agency of your country: every ISBN not registered by the national ISBN agency and/or obtained by a no-official ISBN generator will be rejected.
  • 2-- Books or content you cannot document your rights upon request, like non-original contents or contents available online and replicable without limitation (PRL contents, e.g.).
  • 3-- Books or content that mimic popular titles, with similar covers, cover design, title, author names, or similar type content.
  • 4-- Books with misleading content or that are likely to cause confusion to the buyer, i.e. books with inaccurate descriptions or cover art.
  • 5-- Books created using artificial intelligence (AI) or automated processes that are not correctly categorized using the metadata available in the product sheet, and/or containing erroneous or low-quality content.
  • 6-- Low-quality books - text or images that contain errors, are poorly produced, incomplete, or have metadata or content issues that make the book difficult to understand.
  • 7-- Books that are summaries of other works. However, study guides, analyses of other works, and similar content are accepted, provided they are not limited to summaries of third-party works and include original content for which you own the rights. In such cases: a) The title in the metadata and on the cover must clearly state the type of content (e.g., study guide, analysis, etc.); b) The cover must not resemble or evoke the original work; c) The authors of the original work must not be listed as the authors of the guide or analysis; d) The content must be included in the correct target category, e.g., Study Aids (STU000000).

Sensitive Content Warning (Trigger Warning)

If the book mentions or describes sensitive topics (or so-called triggering topics, as they may evoke traumatic experiences), it is mandatory to include a trigger warning in the synopsis that explicitly states the presence of sensitive content. Examples include books addressing topics such as rape, eating disorders, or suicide.

Child Protection

As outlined in Article 11 of the Distribution Agreement and in the sections on Adult Content and Sexually Explicit Content, pornographic or child pornographic content is not permitted. Additionally, a zero-tolerance policy applies to any form of sexual abuse of minors in the text, images, or audio content of books.

For books with sensitive or sexually explicit content that are allowed under the guidelines, it is mandatory to indicate in the synopsis if the content involves underage protagonists (under 18 years of age), where applicable.

--

We reserve the right to remove content that fits the above criteria without prior notice to the publisher.

We're fully committed to improving our system and to supporting our publishing community for the better, and we're determined to fight against bad actors who want to take advantage of our technology and harm consumers and readers. The StreetLib Content Integrity Guidelines is a work in progress and we believe we need to do our best to keep them up to date and to enforce them to make the publishing world a better place.

Adult Content and Sexually Explicit Content

Our content management guidelines are critical to ensuring a positive experience for our distribution partners, users and end readers.

By recognizing and filtering different content, they ensure that bookstores correctly apply their sales policy and that readers can make purchases with full awareness of the topics covered and the target audience.

PLEASE NOTE. Without prejudice to what is fixed and established by our distribution agreemen (paragraph 11) our adult or sexually explicit content management policy may change over time, aiming to optimize the above-mentioned experience, so we suggest that you periodically check for updates.

Last updated: January 2025

Adult content

The user is required to specify the Audience (Age, Type and Adult ratings). It's crucial to specify the appropriate target audience, especially for works intended exclusively for adults or containing content unsuitable for minors; this ensures that potentially sensitive subject matter is not exposed to an audience not yet ready to understand such issues objectively.

The user is required to specify in the article card whether the published work is suitable for adult audiences only. The classification also includes works of fiction, as well as poetry, script, and comics.

Sexually explicit content allowed

  • • Nude images with artistic, educational, historical or documentary value.
  • • Essays and manuals, scientific texts that deal with the theme of sexuality and its various aspects.

Sexually explicit content not allowed

A zero-tolerance policy is applied to child sexual abuse in the texts, images or audio content of books. It is therefore forbidden to upload and publish child pornography content which, if detected, will be reported to the competent authorities.

It is forbidden to publish sexually explicit text, images, or audio content depicting extreme sex acts, such as zoophilia, abuse and rape, non-consensual sexual acts described for recreational purposes (not scientific or documentary) or incest.

It is also forbidden to publish:

  • • Nude images without artistic, educational, historical or documentary value
  • • Pornographic content
  • • Sexually explicit texts in the book's metadata: title, subtitle, synopsis, keywords

Exceptions based on artistic, educational, historical, documentary or scientific considerations or where there are substantial benefits for the public are allowed.

All erotic literature is permitted, as long as there is no content of sexually-explicit nature in covers, synopses, titles, subtitles and keywords.

Child Protection

For books with sensitive or sexually explicit content that are permitted under the guidelines, it is mandatory to indicate in the synopsis if the content involves underage protagonists (under 18 years of age), where applicable.
